You’re tired of the lighting, the floors, and that one tiny window in the corner with a cobweb collection. You know it’s time for a change. Your house needs a makeover but where to start?
If you want to make a splash, tackle the kitchen first. The kitchen is the heart of your home: this is where you and your family cook, bake, talk, eat, and spend time with each other. In my house, even if the kitchen is a mess of cookies and crayons, we all seem to end up there anyway.
Your kitchen could be stark and impressive, or cozy and welcoming, but it should meet the needs of your family. That’s why a homeowner should approach a kitchen renovation with patience and care. It’s your dream kitchen–don’t rush it! Your mom, your neighbors, your friends, your renovators will give you color-wheels, magazines, Pinterest suggestions, dream-board ideas, so don’t be overwhelmed, and don’t go with the first thing that people tell you. Take the time to explore different options, layouts, and designs to find the best fit for your family and for your kitchen space.
What would you like your kitchen to be? It’s up to you. If you’re a chef and love to cook, plan a bigger spending budget for the most important room in your house. Give yourself space for prep work and light your workspace right. If you have a growing family, put in a big kitchen island so your little ones don’t get playdoh in your homemade pepperoni pizza. Personally, I would keep your kitchen island free of cooktops, large sinks, or other obstacles. Make sure your island can handle dinner prep as well as teens or toddlers snacking on the kitchen stools. Design your kitchen with your needs in mind.
Above all, ignore the trends. I know they look beautiful in the magazines, but if you go with a classic look, your kitchen will still be in-style 15 years down the road. Take your time, have fun, and soon enough you’ll be standing in your beautiful dream kitchen.
